TWC Week 10 Review - The Big Picture
Prof’s slides basically captures the key aspects of the new and emerging technologies of today. It will be good to, at the very least, have a basic understanding of each aspect. Several aspects, which may pique your interest and are worth reading up on are as such:
- Robots and Artificial Intelligence
- Autonomous transportation
- Surveillance Technologies
- Genetic Engineering
- Nanotechnologies
One of the readings in the reading list - Reading 4 – examines the 10 most important emerging technologies for humankind, among which includes a global electronic library, Vibrational medicine and superlearning systems. These are worth reading up on.
It is also interesting to see, in Reading 5: Future Timeline, what are the events that have been predicted to happen in the future. Are any of the events listed under 2015 and 2030 in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals? What is the likelihood of each event happening?
Another interesting reading is Reading 7 which examines the emerging job titles of today. Which type of professionals do you think will be replaced by robots? Could we have the following professions in the future?
a) body part maker
b) climate change reversal specialist
c) memory augmentation surgeon
d) social networking officer
e) virtual lawyer
f) waste data handler
After doing your readings, you may want to examine the following aspects of each emerging technology:
- · implications of the technology
- factors and the extents to which they will affect the acceptance and proliferation of such technologies
- Roles the various stakeholders play in developing such technologies
- How the negative implications of the technology can be circumvented

TWC Week 7 Review - The Big Picture
The BioBusiness Revolution 2: Agriculture and the Environment: Past, Present, Future
Framework
·
What
the technology is about
·
Its
advantages and disadvantages
·
How
prevalent it is in the world currently
·
Whether
countries have been receptive to such technology? If not, what are their
reasons for rejecting or being slow to accept such technology?
·
Can these limitations be overcome?
o
Can
governments play a part in overcoming these limitations through
§ Education (to change the mindsets and
attitudes of the people)
§ Policies and legislation
§ International collaboration and commitment
to several common goals
Some areas
which you may want to explore in greater detail are
·
Genetically-modified
food
·
Diversified
farming system
o
E.g.
Aquaculture
o
E.g.
Lab-grown food
o
E.g.
Commercial vertical farms (these can be found in Singapore!)

TWC Week 6 Review - The Big Picture
With regards to
the BioBusiness Revolution and the biomedical sciences, what has been covered
in class this week can generally be classified under 2 main categories –
healthcare trends and medical technology.
When analyzing
a trend, the following should be kept in mind
What makes it a global trend?
What triggered this global trend? Which
other factors then accelerated this trend? (Notice the roles of the various
stakeholders in perpetuating/promoting such trends – the key stakeholders are
governments, corporations and the public)
o
Some
possible factors are
§ Changing demographics
§ Technological advances
§ Intellectual Property rights (whether governments have championed them) - this affects countries' access to medical technology/breakthroughs in medicine and the proliferation of such technology
What are its effects on the society and
economy?
How can this trend, if negative, be
addressed?
How can the relevant stakeholders
further promulgate positive trends?
Some of the
major medical technology that have been revolutionary/are going to be
revolutionary are as follows. Do understand the nature of these technology, how
they work and their possible future impacts on the society.
Robotic surgery
Augmented Reality Contact Lens
Bionic Eye
Implantable medical devices
Personalized medicine

TWC Week 5 Review - The Big Picture
Here is a suggested structure of how you can categorise
what you have learnt under. This will aid your revision for the final
examinations but more importantly help you to understand the bigger picture. Once
again, it is important not to dwell too much on the specific details.
Present
v How
are the following aspects of ICT being manifested in the world today?
v How
have they impacted societies? Are there certain societies that are not as
receptive to such changes? If so, why not?
v How
will ICT benefit developing countries? To what extent has it impacted the
various millineium development goals stated in Reading 3?
v How
have they impacted the economies? How will they affect the disparities between
developed and developing countries?
v Are
there any legal or ethical implications that may arise from the usage of ICT?
If so, what steps have been taken to mitigate the negative implications?
Future
v What
role do governments have to play in promoting or regulating ICT?
v How
will these various aspects of ICT affect the communications among people in the
near future?
v To
what extent will it impact the various millineium development goals?
v How
do you think ICT will evolve in the next 10-20 years?
Aspects to explore
v Crowdsourcing
v Web
3.0 – personalized products and services
v Social
media
v Data
management and cloud computing
